(early) Reviews (5) Tip Taps Tip

Before we start, let's remind ourselves that the Tip Taps Tip I heard this morning on Eureka 7 was an edited, 1:30-ish version of the single that's going to be released in December. I don't know if it was edited specially for the show, or if they just cut a chunk out of it, but we got the chorus twice and one verse. I say bear this in mind, because honestly, it was bad.

I was really hoping that all my cynicism of the last couple of weeks, the feeling of dread that I was getting from the label change, cynical audience targeting with the anime connection etc. was going to be put right this morning. The writer wasn't O.T.F, ok, but it wasn't someone I specifically hated either (Chipple even described Yusuke as a "friend of Escalator [Records]"), and despite my mixed feelings about the second "difficult" album, there was still enough good stuff on there to imagine that the creases etc. might be smoothed out.

So how can I sum the song up? I don't really agree with Tower's assessment that this is a "more melodious Halcali than we've seen before". In fact, it really sounds like an outtake from Osusume, with a soft-rap inbetween the chorus' akin to Strawberry Chips or Find A Way (from the Baby Blue! single).

Honestly though, it's bland. It's simply lightweight J-pop fluff and it passes out of the mind with the ease of a dental appointment. After recording the song, I listened to it again. Then again, and again. Finally I stopped after I realized that I was trying to like it, trying to find the salvageable bits of the song. In a way, it's ok. The verse doesn't have much, but the chorus is comprised of the kind of lilting background music you could happily half-listen to in an internet cafe or something. Even now, after listening to the song multiple times only an hour ago, i'm struggling to remember what that chorus even goes like.

However, it was not the full song. We'll have to wait until December for that (or next Wednesday if you're in Tokyo, they're playing it on Buzz Room). So i'm not going to write it off until i've had time to assess the single properly. Right now though, the feeling is...urp. If it wasn't Halcali, I wouldn't have given what I heard this morning a second thought.

REALLY depressing news-I suppose I'll have to take solace in my Halfby CDs-I picked up 'Half Works' too, which is just as good as 'Green Hours'-now if only Halcali had signed to Second Royal!

hm...I've been listening to it on a loop for about 10 minutes now.

I'm still not sure what to make of it.........they're actually really singing a bit....which is strange.....

Their rapping even sounds different somehow.

I do like the part where they say "Tip Taps Tip Taps Tip Taps....."

It's not terrible. But it's not HALCALI either......gah...I'm so confused!
*considers preordering*

The reason the rapping sounds different is because they are rapping in sync, which is not what they (or anyone for that matter) usually does. In fact, the entire song is sung in perfect synchrony. There is no longer an H and a Y on the L and the R, there is just a Halcali in the center.

This song simply doesn't seem to have been written with Halcali in mind. And the use of a vocoder: the most obvious symptom of a sub-par song. It's pretty terrible.

But of course I sold my soul to Halcali so feel compelled to follow them into the darkest depths of j-pop with a smile. *Preorders!*

agreed, Im not thrilled either. Shoulnt have dropped the hip-pop thing. Still its only a minute and a half of a whole album, right? maybe it sounds like lightweight J-pop fluff because its being used for the titles of an anime, maybe the rest of the album will be the HALCALI we know and love...(?)

Thats it. The song just sounds so flat, so infuriatingly average.

I wouldn't go as far as to cancel pre-orders, you two! I'm going to stick it out until album 3 at least.

That's probably right. Also lets not forget that its fair to assume that the 3rd album will, like the first two, have multiple writers. I know that H and Y still have a good relationship with OTF, so anythings possible. Most of the anime opening and closing themes do have a kind of hazy boredom about them. I'm sure (I hope?) Halcali's still alive somewhere or other.

is a thrid album even in the works? do you guys think there will be a 3rd album?? :o

true. this is the reason for the flattness, plus the dry lyrics. i mean girigiri surfrider was a whole song about un-insynchedness!! :) with girigiri, halcali WON, WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY DOING sharing style here?

yucali in atsukare summer acts as a fast rapper, you don't see haruka cheering her on and helping her to get through the lyrics, do you??

hm...... oh well,.....

i'll go back to listening to bacon. m(_ _)m ---zzz

Girigiri Surfrider lyrics for you elites:

http://www.centigrade-j.com/translations/girigirisurfrider_halcali.htm

umm, in case you don't know...

Translator's Notes: A word about the title. Giri Giri in this case refers to someone "just barely making it". In this song Haruka and Yukari are riding the beats and trying to stay just ahead of them. Therefore they are the surfer's of the title, trying to ride out the song. They set a record for *'s. We got nine! On we go!

I'm actually surprised-- I'm not as disappointed as the majority seem to be! Considering they just signed to a bigger label, it makes perfect sense that they'll "debut" them with a commercially-viable single like this. And as poorly as it compares to their usual fare, all the cheesy effects sound to me like the mid-90's k-pop I used to love in high school; almost retro! (If I can use that term already...)

I would be disappointed if the whole album was like this, though-- let's just hope this brand of Halcali-lite isn't Epic's long-term plan.

I actually like it .. i was hoping for Halcali to go a bit more into singing .. though I agree that this here sounds to generic ... but as others said .. it is a song for a show .. so . well . at least they are still doing music !!! and it si not too bad ..

The radio show, TV appearances and the inevitable magazine spreads do seem to add up to a decent sized promo push. I'm sure we'll get a third album at some point.

Reading Becks comment, then listening to the song again made me think- yes, it would be terrible if the whole album was like this, but couldn't this song fit quite snugly somewhere in the middle of album 3?

I actually like the arm warmers.
I'd wear those. :)

I must admit, the littleclip of the song is really growing on me.
*Maybe I'm just happy to hear new HALCALI*

Yeah, I think it is starting to grow on me too. I find it hard waiting for the whole thing though.

I must disagree with those who think "Tip Taps" is bland or not a good song. I was blown away by it the first time I listened to the preview. It's definately a new sound for them but, I like it. Maybe it's because I like melodic fluff like that... I'm definately going to purchase the single when it comes out. I think the complete version of the song will reveal itself to be even better than anticipated. But yeah, Tip Taps is AwesomeSauce.

I'm glad that you like it, I was hoping someone might come along and go against the general flow of negativity. It's true that we've all only heard a snippet of the song too, i've still got all my fingers crossed that the full length version will be a grower.
