Spoon Market

This is a bit of minor-ish news perhaps, but it's worth a mention, not least because it has an interesting twist.

Halcali will join the line-up of the Spoon Market DU/O8S event being held at Tokyo's Daikanyama UNIT on September 21st. The twist being that this is an all girl-band event, with Nirgilis, 80 pan and Flip-Flap currently filling out the roster, although more girl bands are set to join the line-up in the near future.

To be honest, part of me wishes Halcali would stop doing these kind of play a 20 minute set at the bottom of the bill kind of gigs and get on with putting together the type of shows in Japan they recently put on in France and elsewhere. Publicity is publicity I guess, and it is good to see these kind of female dominated shows going out, but it still feels a bit limiting for them to still be playing second fiddle to the 80 pan's and Flip-Flap's of the world.

Lordy! That's an excellent surprise. I DJed at the first couple of Spoon Market events, which were great, although I'm amazed that they're putting on HalCali. The other two events were made up of revered but very underground bands.

I have to say, I don't think it's such a bad thing for them to play with other artists like this. They still need some cross-exposure to build their profile, and after all, anyone who doesn't know HalCali will be instantly won over by their fantastic live shows.

Funnily enough I did some work recently with 80_Pan. Looking forward to seeing their show, since they've changed massively since the last time I saw them. Not a patch on HalCali of course!

I should be there, although I may have to go to London around that time. Happy to share a few words if I make it.

Yes, 80_Pan suffered some hardcore badness on their trip to London (or to Heathrow Airport, since they never made it in to Britain). I hear they wrote a detailed blog about it (in Japanese). I can't really go into it, but yes, nightmare.
